A secret society, the name says it already, is intended as something that the public knows nothing, or little, of. Otherwise it would not be a secret! However, the existence of these societies is not secret to the public, only their doing and leaving, sometimes their mission and usually their inner rules and activities. Every now and then, we as “normal people” get a glimpse of what such a secret society does. This is usually the case when the society in question takes a measure against society, and usually these confrontations are not too enjoyable.

But that being said, secret societies are of all ages, and occur in all shapes and sizes. Nowadays, it’s easy to maintain an international society, after all, the Internet gives access to everything and everyone around the world. However, limited communication through pen and parchment did not previously prevent societies from spreading worldwide. Below are the names of ten big fellows who have known our history (and some have been around for centuries, and still!)

10. Ordo Templi Orientis

ordo templi orientis - TOP 10 MOST SECRET SOCIETIES

We start with a ‘boy’. The Ordo Templi Orientis is a new-age esoteric, and focuses on finding your own identity. Members perform ritual and other occult acts to rise in the Ordo ranges. A well-known Ordo member was Aleister Crowly, who has written the manifesto Mysteria Mystica Maxima for the Ordo Tempi. After his death, however, the Ordo Tempi fell in popularity. They still exist, but to a small extent, mainly in the United States and England. They have also become increasingly open in their practices, although those practices do not diminish in remarkableness! Thus, at the Ordo Tempi, they have a strange fascination for sexuality, and the ‘magic of masturbation’. What could be magic about such an act

9. The Bilderberg Group

bilderberg groep - TOP 10 MOST SECRET SOCIETIES

We take a broad interpretation of “society” as the Bilderberg group is basically not really a society but a group of like-minded people. They are therefore no less secretive, and therefore earn a spot on this list. It’s a group of people who meet every year (you must have an invitation!). Only world leaders, media moguls and SEOs from multinationals get such an invitation. This group has been together since 1954 (first meeting in the Dutch Bilderberg hotel in Oosterbeek, hence the name), and their official agenda is discussing the integration of different cultures around the world. That, in any case, is what they claim to do. However, nobody knows what is really being discussed, and media is not allowed nor do the invited guests talk about their findings after the meetings! Despite the “innocent” nature of what should be discussed (cultural integration) surveillance during these meetings is huge!

It’s hard not to transform any suspicious feelings here. The most popular theory (but by no means the only one) is that during these meetings, one government is pursuing world domination. But no one who knows the truth! Except, of course, … the invitees!

8. Hashshashin

Health! We’re going back in time, about seven centuries, but most of all. Hashshashin literally means assassin and its members lived in the Middle Ages. They were Muslims, but a group split apart because they disagree with the way they used their business. These Shia Muslims thought it would be a good idea to set up their own Utopian state. However, their numbers were small, and so they needed all kinds of military tactics to keep the hand and keep their enemies out of their utopia. Therefore, they did not return from sabotage, espionage, and mainly to political assassination. But do not judge them too hard, because members of the Hashshashin were known for the minimal civilian victims they knew!

Unfortunately, they were wiped out by the Mongols, who almost conquered Europe throughout the time, led by Genghis and grandson Kublai Kahn. Unfortunately, their library, which included expensive manuscripts about their doing and leaving, was totally destroyed. However, there is rumor that members used drugs during their attacks. Hashshashin could mean ‘hashshash-in’ or hashish-nemer.However, the original meaning, “killer” is truly the more credible interpretation for most historians!

7. The Black Hand

‘The Black Hand’ was a society of something different. It consisted of anti-imperialists and revolutionaries in Serbia, and dates back to 1912. The idea: a united Slavic people. Their goal: splitting the monarchy Austria-Hungary. The plan: to initiate a war between Serbia and Austria, so that the areas of Slavic peoples could be recovered.

Perhaps the group had fallen into oblivion, did not they play a decisive role in the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the start of the first world war. However, this war did not really give the members what they wanted, and eventually resulted in Russian rule over the last 30 years through World War II!

6. The Golden Circles Knights

Knights of the Golden Circle - TOP 10 MOST SECRET SOCIETIES

A century before the Black Hand and on the other side of the world, the Knights of the Golden Circle were active. This group of men were active during the American Civil War. This society, however, was not limited to mysterious gatherings and rituals. They formed a regular guerrillas army, making them, sometimes successful, anxiously threatening the enemy. Unfortunately, we do not know about their internal rituals, but because they have a brilliant name, they deserve listing in this list!

Thule Gesellschaft - TOP 10 MOST SECRET SOCIETIES

Many societies are accused of having malicious intentions, but this is one of the few proofs that this was indeed the case. Its origin is in Germany, shortly after the First World War. They soon developed a focus on the Arctic race, and began discriminating ideas towards Jews and others ‘less fortunate’. In 1919, they started a political branch called the German Labor Party. The rumor is that Adolf Hitler was a member of this society. He was in fact a member of the party! In fact, he gradually took over the party …

4. Sons of Liberty

The Freedom Sons, not so much a central society, as an agglomeration of smaller groups that operated more or less under the same denominator. All this just before the American Revolutionary War (England War, 1775-1783). They met each other around an eleven, and this el is now known as the freedom tree. There they discussed their plans to promote resistance (against English dominance). They are especially known for their saying “no taxation without representation” or “no tax without representation” (but of course it sounds much more beautiful in English). Another world-infamous act of Boston’s Sons, the Boston Tea Party, where she dressed as Indians, packed a lot of tea into the port. Now, English can have a lot, but their tea is lost in this way … The war broke well!

3. Skulls and Bones

Translated, this is the society of ‘skulls and bones’, and both presidents Bush (Senior and Junior) are members of it, as well as John Kerry! It is a university student organization (exactly one of the infamous student clubs). Every year new members are sought and the only requirement for participation is that you are a campus leader. In other words, only top athletes, members of the student council, and other presidents of major clubs are eligible. Very open, so, and still a little bit limited …

Until the disappointment of conspiracy fans, few occult rituals appear to be performed during the weekly meetings of the club. In any case, nothing of this kind comes out! As an initiative, members must submit their sex history to the entire club, and get a nickname based on it. For example, Bush would be called “Magog”. Well, with such a nickname, this society deserves a nice third place.

2. Illuminat

They are the subject of a very successful book, and perhaps even more successful filming, but it’s not all fiction that Dan Brown wrote. The actual organization comes from Germany, from 1700, and consisted of a group of illuminated free thinkers. The media, however, turned their backs on and soon they were seen in the eyes of the ordinary people as dissidents and rioters who wanted to sabotage the government. Shortly thereafter, the group broke apart, but thanks to their constant attention in popular media, they have not been forgotten.

Some conspiracy theorists believe that the Illuminati has not disappeared, but only submerged. As a real secret organization, that is possible. After all, they are only a good secret if we do not know. The Bush, Obama, Churchhill family, all of them would have been a member of it! As long as they are a truly secret organization, we will never be sure. Because they are so popular in the media, and because everyone knows, this officially non-existent society will get a well-deserved second place.

1. The Freemasons

Perhaps not as mysterious as before, this is one of the oldest, widespread and ever mysterious organizations in the world. It is estimated that around 5 million people are members of the Freemasons, today. Of course, they started small, in 1717, although there is a suspicion that something was going on much earlier. Some historians believe documents can be found as far back as in 1300!

The central idea consisted of the need for moral sincerity, agony and charity work. However, so much good can never, presumptuous conspiracy theorists, and there are rumors that the Freemasons participate in all kinds of occult rituals. One of the few rituals that has been confirmed, however, is that you can only become a member if another freemason recommends you. Art, with 5 million members …

They deserve the first place because of their size, and because they have had an aura of mystery for so long.

As the Illuminati already illustrates, it’s hard to say which secret societies exist on the world, after all, the ‘good’ secret societies are not known to us. However, the less ‘secret’ secret societies, those societies that openly exist and are only secret to their practices, these societies have passed the revue. That is, a very small grip from a huge number. Whatever is true, as far as societies are concerned, secret or not, occult or not, from the present or past, there is something for everyone to taste. If not, … do you create your own society?
