We all know the concept of lie detector. But what exactly is it? In the classical test, it is assumed that an emotionally charged stimulus responds to the autonomic nervous system. A lie is often accompanied by an emotion. This causes physiological activity: skin reaction, an increase in heart rate, an increase in respiratory rate, increase in blood pressure and increased muscle tension. The classical lie detector is also called Polygraph Test in English. This test uses a polygraph. That is a device that measures the above physiological responses. As the device measures, questions are also asked about the potential liar, which happens with a special survey technique.
The classic test is becoming less and less used. Leaden detection increasingly uses commercial equipment and software for speech analysis. This is called the Voice Stress Analysis (USA). Again, there is an interrogation protocol, but this is combined with equipment that measures acoustic characteristics of speech, such as changes in pitch and vibration. This can refer to stress, which can be the consequence of the truth, and thus tell a lie. But is this equipment reliable? Is it reasonable that this equipment is used to condemn someone? According to many, not. The reliability of Lie detectors has not been proven scientifically. These are the 10 reasons why lie detectors are unreliable.
1. A lie detector measures only fear
If a machine is needed to measure anxiety, then we do not have to figure it out. The Leukendetector is good at this. The problem of the lie detector is, when it comes to measuring lies, that the fear that measures the device is not necessarily anxiety from truthfulness. Even so, people who lie often show less fear because they have simply become very good at lying. They have no reason to be afraid. With a lie detector, which only measures anxiety , these true liars are not condemned.
2. Lying is not always physically expressed
While it may be that a lie gives a physical response, this does not necessarily have to be the case. It is even so that no physical reaction, such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure and sweating is directly linked to lying or telling the truth. A physical reaction is often the result of an emotion, but it can also be in a totally different fear than the fear of telling the truth.
3. False are accused, causing excitement
People who are wrongly accused of being led to the lie detector are often overwhelming. They are angry that they are doing this. But what happens with a lie detector when there is excitement ?Precisely, it will measure this emotion of excitement and by the physical reaction, much faster as a result of the existence of a liar. While that is not the case.
4. A lie detector can be defeated by training
There are methods to defeat the lie detector, that is, to allow the detector to measure the opposite than reality. So you can hide a lie or hide the truth. Physiological signs can be changed by conscious efforts. In fact, it makes you feel very relaxed by letting you know that you are innocent.
5. The placebo effect affects the results
It is a matter of what is believed by the suspect in the lie detector. If he / she strongly believes that the device can actually measure lies, the suspect will fall a lot faster through the basket (or an innocent person will be charged). He / she feels very tense, so the device measures to blame more quickly. If the suspect has serious doubts about the device or does not believe it completely, then the chance is much greater that innocence is measured. The suspect will not make much less or less pressure on the outcome. The placebo effect (your own belief) thus strongly influences the results of the lie detector .
6. The Leader Detector Leader determines how a lie looks
Behind every decrease with a lie detector is also a test leader, the one who decreases the test. The tutor has its own version of what a lie looks like. The supervisor also determines which control questions he or she will make to find out if someone is lying. Even the results are determined by the supervisor. In this the pilot has plenty of freedom, the test is not objective . Perhaps there is nothing at all about how the trial leader works. Who will say it?

7. The pilot is just a human being
As mentioned in point 6, the supervisor determines the outcome of the lie detector test. That can cause a distorted image. Before and during mapping the ‘truth’, the trial leader will (consciously or unconsciously) evaluate the trueness of the accused and act on it. In fact, this simply means that every step that the test leader makes during the league test is determined by his / her (subjective) opinion as human. That is of course not entirely (objective) scientific.
8. A short training is already enough to become a leader of a lie detector
Only a very short training is needed to become a leader of a lie detector to take a leak test. Even for the decline with the most prestigious polygraph lie detector, only 14 weeks of training is required. For something simple as getting a hairdresser, training is needed for 26 weeks. Why could such and complexity and importance be learned and learned in such a short while? In addition, there is also a lack of education requirements that will be put to potential supervisors. That is to say, the one who drops the test can be someone who has hardly any education or work experience.
9. It is impossible to measure a lie detector on validity
A study has been sought to measure the validity of a lie detector, but that is not available. Laboratory studies are often focused on wrongdoing and accusations. It does not work with lifelike emotions in test subjects. It is difficult to imitate these lifelike emotions when testing the validity of a lie detector. The most important thing in determining the validity of the lie detector is to find out that the device measures what it should measure. And that’s simply not to be found. Thus, it remains forever the question of what the detective detects accurately.
10. Fraud costs no effort and therefore a lie detector can not prove to be a fault
Scientific research has not proven that fraud effort costs and thus creates a physical response. Thus, a lie detector can not prove to be a fault. Little research has been done on the results of detectors. That is, it may be very good that many innocents are currently behind the bars. That is of course very shameful. It is therefore very important that we remain skeptical about the use of leak detectors.
